World's Finest #4.....4 Stars

Yes you are correct, that is DC's premier Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) on the cover, so if your a big Green Lantern fan it is worth picking up even if he's playing the role as an adversary....though I recommend picking this series up from issue 1.  A quick review that will just stick to the comic, as I've already been raving about how good this series has been, despite the plot holes in this issue.  (They never explain how Robin or Supergirl are able to speak medieval Japan when they go back in time. Most of us wouldn't be able to understand medieval English, let alone Japanese)  (I'm assuming they are drawing on the demonic supervillains magic so that Bruce & Clark can merge into one magical entity of willpower? Only Alan Scott's Green Lantern ring is magically powered.) It's fun and enjoyable. I will try not to give away to many spoilers other than that I enjoy how Bruce and Clark use their wits to take down a hyper powered Green Lantern, and then disp

DC: Pride Tim Drake Special .....2.5 stars

DC Pride Tim Drake Special.....2.5 Stars  As there was nothing of interest last week to purchase from DC, I decided to purchase the DC Pride: Tim Drake Special to find out what all the hoopla was about. For those of you who don't know, Tim Drake (the prominent Robin of the 90's) came out as being bisexual of late, which resulted in a massive backlash from Tim Drake fans, not as a result of him having an attraction to the same sex as I understand it, but rather because it didn't align with his historical continuity of liking women.  On this I cannot comment, as I have never had a vested interest in Tim Drake, but I do have a vested interested in John Constantine and it didn't bother me when they made him bisexual, because it didn't greatly impact his continuity (If they had make him gay however, I would have been greatly miffed because it would have nullified his ongoing on and off romance with Zatanna), but.... welcome to the world of DC, whereby loyal customers c

Poison Ivy #1.......4.5 Stars

Poison Ivy #1 When I picked up issue 1 of Poison Ivy I had my trepidations, was I going to get Poison Ivy the trendy anti hero, or was I going to get the real Poison Ivy; psychopathic, murderous eco killer, and to my pleasant surprise I got the latter.  I've never read anything by Marcio Takara before, but I heard that she was an all American girl who was raised as an atheist, and then eventually converted to Islam, interesting twist, but that got my agnostic brain thinking; Islam and Christianity are essentially cousins and hold the same view of nature being corrupted , so I can't help but think that Takara might be tapping into this with Poison Ivy's villainy. I am tempted to go into the dark history of nature worship and it's connection to totalitarian ideologies from the French Revolution to the Third Reich, but......this is not the forum for such an endeavor. For me, it just means that Takara probably gets it. Poison Ivy isn't a peace loving anti hero hippy,

Aquaman Andromeda......3.5 Stars

Aquaman Andromeda: Book 1 So I've heard a lot of great things about Ram V. as a writer (particularly for his work on Swamp Thing) so I was keen to check this out, and my verdict is that I was neither over or underwhelmed  by his work on this issue, but rather.....I'd say it will probably take me awhile before I become accustom to his writing style, before I can determine if he lives up to the hype.  Let me elaborate further, believe it or not after decades of collecting comics I had never encountered Grant Morrison's work until his latest Green Lantern run, and despite my best efforts, and recognizing that this is a style that some people love, I just could not get into his rather dense wordy writing. I did feel a little a bit this way after reading Ram V's Andromeda, but not to the same extent, but I also initially recall loathing Tom King's work, but today he is now one of my favourite DC writers...so in short, I'm still looking forward to the Zdarsky, Ram V

Dark Crisis #1.....3.5 Stars

Dark Crisis #1 So the proposed series that caused a huge kerfuffle, and an imminent fan backlash over a year ago has finally been released in it's amended form. For those who are unaware of what this kerfuffle was, I shall enlighten you. Former DC Comics head executive Dan Didio had proposed a big event dubbed 5G, which would see the existing JLA (DC's top 6 superheroes) replaced by younger more diverse carbon copies of them. This understandingly caused a fan backlash, not because they are against diversity of course, but rather because they do not want to see their favourite heroes replaced, and sidelined to obscurity. Despite this, Dido kept pushing the idea, fans kept pushing back, and Didio was fired, so the fans won, or did they?  Knowing that 5G was too much of a hot potato DC scrapped the idea, but not in it's entirety, for there would still be a 5G, the story would just take place further down the road, and therefore not directly impact existing titles and heroes

Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1....3 stars

Image
Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1 There are five writers on this comic, which is the prelude to DC's big summer event; Dark Crisis, so I guess it's best to go through each of the writer's.  Joshua Williamson does the first story with Nightwing and Superman Jonathan Kent (no, not Clark Kent another Superman...I'll touch on it later) . It starts off with a brief battle with a supervillain, and leads into Nightwing giving Superman a pep talk on being strong & hopeful in the absent of the Justice League. Not bad I guess, but pretty ho hum.  Next up is Jeremy Adams writing pretty much the same thing as Williamson, except this time it's Flash (Wally West) consoling Kid Flash (Wallace West) over the disappearance of the Justice League, and the presumed death of Flash (Barry Allen) A little more action in this one, Jeremy Adams is a pretty good writer, but overall the story is pretty ho hum as well.  In the third story Chuck Brown has Green Lantern Hal Jordan t

Shadow war Omega 1#.....2.5 Stars

Shadow war Omega 1#   Joshua Williamson is a good writer, but he does have his limitations, and in my opinion one of those limitations is his inability to really shine when it comes to writing street fighting heroes. I don't think it's really his fault, I just don't think it's his forte. Perhaps his upbringing or life experiences hasn't necessitated the experience to write the gritty personas required for the street life of the DCU? But for whatever reason, this drawback of his does show up in this comic , but before I touch on that, let's look at some other downsides of this issue.  If your a fan of Black Canary, you'll be disappointed after reading Shadow War Zone issue #1, as it appears her plotline from that issue ends here, and she only plays a small cameo role. (Perhaps DC will backtrack the history in another issue) If your a fan of Geo Force you will also be disappointed as he plays the villain here in a largely recycled plotline (Hero's city is
