Dark Crisis: Green Lantern #1.....4 Stars

 Dark Crisis: Worlds without a Justice League - Green Lantern 1


This is a good comic, primarily because it has two good writers on it; Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Currently writing Action Comics) & Jeremy Adams (Currently writing the Flash) with decent artists to boot. 

The first story written by PKJ, has John Stewart living on a farm world, while his sister is telling tales to her daughter about John Stewart as a Green Lantern hero called the Guardian. In the midst of a story they are interrupted by a distress call from the Green Lanterns, whereby John is scolded by his sister as he promised her he would not cape up a a superhero anymore, and therefore makes it clear that this will be the last time. John thus sports a new costume look and comes to rescue, at one point sporting angel wings to go inline with Stewarts's recent upgrade as a demigod by the source (The Jehovah god of the DC Universe) 

It's obvious that this is the classic dream world trap narrative, whereby the villain has convinced the hero to live happily in an alternate peaceful reality to keep him subdued. One does wonder how Pariah has been able to trap John here, let alone kill him, if he's become an angelic being endowed with holy powers from the force, but we will leave that aside for now. I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation. 

The second story is written by Jeremy Adams and it features Kendra Saunders as Hawkgirl on an archeological hunt, searching for an end to her reincarnations by seeking out an artifact that grants not immortality, but rather mortality. A nice twist with some interesting action. 

For a comic that appears to be somewhat of an interlude filler for Dark Crisis, it was rather enjoyable.

  Aquamen #1 First off I hate the name. There technically should only be one Aquaman, and as one of DC comics big six heroes he should be headlining his own title, both for marketing and brand reasons.  However let's address the elephant in the room. It's long since been believed that DC feels there is a lack of racial diversity in their titles (This is an indisputable fact), and that they've been planning to rectify this by replacing current white male heroes. (There is evidence to validate this line of thinking, ie Firestorm, Atom, Mr. Miracle, Blue Beetle/The Question, but a lot of it is speculative as well)  At any right, I would have preferred at the very least Aquaman and Aqualad as the title, as we've already seen what happens to comic sales when you have a partitioned fanbase preferring one of the two Flash's, Firestorm's or six of the Green Lantern's, so you can imagine what will happen to Aquaman sales once one is headlining and the other is not. Aquamen #2..... 2.5.... stars

  Aquamen: Issue 2 It's no secret that both DC and Marvel have been taken to the woodshed by Scholastic and Manga of late, when it comes to selling comics or graphic novels that are marketed towards pre teen and teen readers, but here at least, is one area where DC is outselling Marvel. When one reads Aquamen 2, one gets the sense that the writing is targeted for younger teenage readers, which in theory isn't a bad thing, except one major problem... Aquamen is designated for the direct market, and I'm unaware of where comics can be bought for younger readers these days outside of comic stores, for the days of finding a plethora of comics on the twirling magazine racks at your corner store is long gone, so I'm not sure how much of these printed issues are going to get in the hands of 12 years olds, which brings us to problem two.... Tim Drake Robin #1....3 Stars

Tim Drake Robin # 1                                                    No I'm not going to give this 1 star, like a lot of comic fans would like me to do, but I do sympathize with Tim Drake fans. Having one of your favourite heroes continuity changed for the sake of gender politics, and then tossed to a writer who has a non conventional writing style, only to be called a bigot on reddit or comic forums when you protest, is a really shitty thing for DC to do to Tim Drake fans. I was never a Tim Drake fan, by the time the  90's were in full swing I was done with sidekicks, but I always recognized he was an extremely popular character. Not many titles reach 50 issues let alone 183! Which is what the Robin title reached under Tim Drake, so you think that DC would clue in and realize that there was a big market out there for another Tim Drake run, but DC never learns do they.
