 Aquamen #1

First off I hate the name. There technically should only be one Aquaman, and as one of DC comics big six heroes he should be headlining his own title, both for marketing and brand reasons.

However let's address the elephant in the room. It's long since been believed that DC feels there is a lack of racial diversity in their titles (This is an indisputable fact), and that they've been planning to rectify this by replacing current white male heroes. (There is evidence to validate this line of thinking, ie Firestorm, Atom, Mr. Miracle, Blue Beetle/The Question, but a lot of it is speculative as well)

At any right, I would have preferred at the very least Aquaman and Aqualad as the title, as we've already seen what happens to comic sales when you have a partitioned fanbase preferring one of the two Flash's, Firestorm's or six of the Green Lantern's, so you can imagine what will happen to Aquaman sales once one is headlining and the other is not. At any right I digress, let's get to the story.

Aquaman (Arthur Curry) & Aquaman (Jackson Hyde) show up to thwart Ocean Master's attack on the United Nations, as he seeks to dispose of the Atlantean ambassador, meanwhile Black Manta subdues a human individual, whom while eating dinner begins to speak a strange foreign language and attempts to violently attack his companion. After being subdued, he quickly dies of cardiac arrest, so Black Manta takes him to his lab, to identify the root cause of the erratic outburst, in which he discovers the human possesses Atlantean DNA. He's later attacked by Jackson Hyde, but Arthur breaks up the tussle explaning to him that Black Manta (your father) is on our side this time, as yet another human commits a violent act, speaking the strange language in the same manner of the first, via blowing himself, his house and family up in a detonated explosion. Therefore setting up the mystery to be solved in the next issue.

The writing is decent, (Chuck Brown & Brandon Thomas) & the art and colouring (Sami Basri & Adriano Lucas) is quality stuff. You can tell that Jackson Hyde is going to play a major role in this series, perhaps more so than Arthur, so if your a fan of either characters, it's worth picking up.

*** 3 Starts out of 5.
